Class Attendance
The requirements for class attendance vary from course to course, instructor to instructor. All attendance policies should be detailed in the course outline, which is distributed at the beginning of the semester. Be sure you understand the attendance requirements and ask your professor if you have any questions. If you are involved in a university function that conflicts with class attendance (ex. ensemble tour, NATS competition, etc.), ask your ensemble director or applied instructor to contact your professors to request an excused absence.
If excused, all work associated with the missed class(es) must still be completed. When you present the excuse letter to each instructor, be sure to discuss the coursework for which you are responsible for completing upon your return to class.
Should a conflict between an outside job and a departmental requirement come up, it is expected that the student’s first responsibility will be to the activities in the School of Music. Contact the appropriate faculty member if such conflict is unavoidable.
Graduation
As you prepare to graduate from UNO, there are several things you should know. Please check with your academic advisor for specific deadlines AND review the information on the “Graduation General Information” page. Music majors must maintain a 2.25 grade point average in music courses to be eligible for graduation. Students must earn a grade of C (2.0) or higher in all required major courses.
Course Load
How many credits or courses should you take each semester? Visit the Course Load page. Permission to enroll for 17 or more credit hours should be obtained from the student’s academic advisor.
Academic Integrity
UNO takes every possible measure to make sure you have the tools and resources you need to achieve academically. Make sure you do not jeopardize your future by making bad decisions, read the Academic Integrity Policies. All questions and concerns about academic integrity should be directed to the Office of Academic & Student Affairs.
Financial Aid - Dropping or Withdrawing
If you drop a class before the semester starts or during the first week of classes, aid that has been awarded or already disbursed to you may have to be adjusted. Depending upon when you withdraw from school, you may be required to repay a portion of any aid you have received in the term in which you are withdrawing. Email Financial Aid, visit their web page, or call 402.554.2327 before you drop/withdraw to find out how your aid may be affected.
Student Code of Conduct
The University has an obligation to maintain conditions under which the work of UNO can go forward freely, in accordance with the highest standards of quality, institutional integrity, and freedom of expression, with full recognition by all concerned of the right and privileges, as well as the responsibilities, of those who comprise the UNO community. Please read the Student Code of Conduct.
Hazing Policy
The Hazing Policy adopted by UNO University is located in the Bullying and Hazing Support page. UNO has a zero-tolerance hazing policy, and any individuals or organizations found in violation of this policy will face university disciplinary proceedings accordingly.
Disruptive Activities Policy
The response of the University to disruptive behavior can be found on the Student Rights & Responsibilities page (Section V, Numeral 3). The policy describes the university’s rights to take disciplinary action against individual students and/or groups who are involved in disruptive activities.
UNO Alcohol Policy
The consumption of alcohol on campus is authorized and governed by Regental policy and the Nebraska Liquor Control Act. Visit the Alcohol Policy page to view an outline of the administrative procedures and requirements for serving alcoholic beverages at appropriate events on campus.
Probation and Suspension
Probation
A student whose cumulative grade point average (GPA) is below 2.0 after having attempted six (6) or more semester hours work will be placed on probation. Probationary status will remain in effect as long as the student’s cumulative GPA remains below 2.0. No student will be allowed to enroll for any course on a pass/fail or Credit/No Credit basis while on probation. Probation constitutes a period of formal warning that the student is doing unsatisfactory work.
The student is encouraged to use every opportunity during time on probation to seek counsel and guidance from various university agencies that have been established to offer assistance in study and academic planning. For information about these services, the student should consult with his or her academic adviser or counselor.
Students on probation are processed according to each individual college procedures. The university does not contact these students.
Suspension
Starting with the fall 2005 semester, students will no longer be suspended at the end of the fall term; students will only be suspended at the end of the spring term. This rule applies to all UNO colleges, including University Division, and all University of Nebraska-Lincoln based programs in the Colleges of Architecture, Agriculture, Education and Human Resources, and Engineering.
Students who are on probation will be suspended at the end of the spring semester when their semester grade point average is lower than 2.0 and the cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) falls below the following standards:

Suspensions under these conditions will be automatic. Academic suspension will be for a minimum period of one year.
Students will be notified by their primary academic college of their suspension and given instructions on how to appeal, should they choose to do so, and any appropriate deadlines associated with an appeal. Appeals properly filed shall delay implementation of the suspension until the appropriate appeals committee has acted. However, if the appeal is denied the student shall be dis-enrolled and tuition shall be refunded.
Reinstatement Following Suspension
Applications for reinstatement of students on academic suspension from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) shall be obtained from the college from which the student was suspended and submitted to the Office of the University Registrar. This application must be submitted at least one (1) month prior to the official beginning of the semester or term for which the student is applying (refer to academic calendar for specific dates).
